Arise is excited to welcome onboard Marijn Wiersma, who has been appointed as Arise’s Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Specialist. Mrs Wiersma, who joined the team on 1 October boasts over two decades of experience with regards to sustainable development on the African continent in both the public and private sector.
A Corporate Anthropologist and former financial inclusion expert at FMO, one of Arise’s shareholders, she will spearhead Arise’s ESG portfolio. She will be responsible for collaboratively working with investee companies to promote financial inclusion. Having worked for the United Nations and various NGOs in development banking, health care and emergency relief as well as with banks worldwide, she is passionate about making a meaningful impact on people’s lives and contributing to a sustainable environment. Mrs Wiersma is excited to be afforded an opportunity to pursue her passion of helping financial institutions make a meaningful contribution to their economy. Working with banks on people and planet issues, making bankers aware of the social and environmental risks and then turning these risks into viable finance opportunities is one aspect of her role that she is looking forward to.
Mrs Wiersma also holds a MAs degree in Development Sociology and Cultural Anthropology from Leiden University.
