Equity Group unveils its comprehensive 2023 Sustainability Report

Equity Group recently released its 2023 Sustainability Report, themed  “A sustainable world is a transformed Africa,” highlighting its ambitious vision and substantial impact. This year, the Group has evolved its sustainability strategy from a twin-engine to a comprehensive tri-engine model, integrating social, economic, nature, and environment factors to drive a robust sustainable business model.

Equity Group’s commitment to sustainability is demonstrated through its ongoing social interventions and economic empowerment initiatives, including the creation of 1,266,182 cumulative jobs via the Young Africa Works Programme. This dedication has garnered recognition from Euromoney, naming Equity Group the Best Bank in Corporate Social Responsibility in Africa for two consecutive years.

By harnessing cutting-edge technology, the Group has further advanced its impact, with over Kshs. 11.72 billion in digital transactions, Kshs. 240.7 billion through mobile and internet banking, and Kshs. 28.17 billion via agency banking. This technological innovation has significantly expanded financial services to previously underserved customers, effectively reaching the last mile and addressing the needs of those who would otherwise remain underbanked.

Additionally, Equity Group remains at the forefront of climate change mitigation, partnering with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) to execute 47,000 climate transactions—the highest number globally. These efforts are pivotal in addressing climate mitigation and adaptation, reinforcing the Group’s leadership in combating climate change.

A key feature of the report is Equity Group’s pioneering adoption of the Task Force on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), which has led to the integration of nature risk into decision-making processes. The Group has conducted its first nature and biodiversity risk assessment in the mining and agricultural sectors, underscoring its commitment to addressing natural capital’s role in Africa’s economy.
